Guest blogging is an essential part of any content marketing strategy. The concept is simple. Instead of writing a blog for your own website you write one for a different site. If the website owner accepts the post, your work has a new audience and you can build your brand.
A large percentage of my work involves writing guest posts. The brief usually contains URL of the client’s site, some anchor text, and a note of where the guest post is being placed. Sometimes the relationship between the subject matter on the client site and the guest site is tenuous, to say the least. The skill is finding a topic that works for both. For the client, though, guest posting is a no-brainer.
If a reader enjoys your guest post, there is a good chance that they will follow the link in the post straight back to your website. Make sure the page they end up on has a strong CTA, or your hard work will have been in vain.
A guest posting strategy is a good way to build natural backlinks. Search engines look at how many links point to a site. The more links you have, the more popular you appear to be, so for SEO purposes, guest posting kicks ass. However, it’s important to avoid submitting guest blogs to poor quality sites that have no relevance to your own. If you do, you risk damaging your site’s reputation with the search engines.
Build a Brand
How visible is your brand online? If the answer is “not at all”, now is a great time to start writing and posting guest blogs. Use guest blogging to raise brand awareness and let people know more about what you do. Well-written posts are frequently shared on social media and with friends and acquaintances.
Promote Your Business
Guest posting is a quick and easy way to promote a business. Writing in-depth, knowledgeable posts that are helpful and informative can really raise your profile. Once you are an established authority in your niche, other bloggers will want to connect with you. If done well, writing guest posts for carefully targeted websites could land you some new customers.
Nurture Professional Relationships
How often do you communicate with your fellow businessmen and women outside of networking events? Why not offer to write some guests posts for people in your industry? It’s an easy way to nurture relationships and set the groundwork for future collaborations, not to mention build backlinks to useful and relevant websites in your niche.
How to Write a Guest Post
Spend time researching suitable websites that are a good fit for your brand and business sector. If the website has published guest posting guidelines, follow these to the letter. If not, reach out to the website owner and ask them what type of posts they are looking for. It is important to write a post that is useful to the site’s readers, so the topic must be relevant. Check on their link guidelines, too, as some websites insist on “no-follow” links.
Use guest posting as an opportunity to boost your writing skills and don’t forget to promote your posts on social media, but if you don’t have the time or inclination to write blogs, talk to me!
